HOSIE MAIN MEMORIAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP

Hosie Main Memorial Music Scholarship

The Hosie Main Memorial Music Scholarship

Hosie Main was a man who dedicated the better part of his 100 years of life to music and to teaching and sharing the joy of music with others. Hosie graduated from Hamline University in St. Paul, MN and received his Master of Music at MacPhail School of Music in Minneapolis, MN. While obtaining his Master's, Hosie enjoyed playing string bass in dance bands at Glacier Park and on the President Line cruising to the Orient in the summers. Hosie taught music at Freeborn, MN from 1937 to 1940 where he met his wife, Barbara Guckeen, the school principal. Shortly after the couple was married, they moved to Ekalaka, MT where they both taught until Hosie joined the US Army. Hosie was in the Normandy Invasion on D-Day and retired as a Major from the US Army Reserves. Hosie and his family moved to Rapid City, SD in 1948 where Hosie taught orchestra for 27 years. He also continued to play string bass with his dance combo. He received the South Dakota Music Educators Distinguished Service to Music Award.

Hosie was a charter member of the Rapid City Fine Arts Council, member of the Downtown Lions Club, Canyon Lake United Methodist Church, Elks Lodge, Retired Teachers, Canyon Lake Senior Citizens, American Marquetry Society and TROA Retired Officers. In addition to Hosie's passion for music and service to his country and community, he crafted marquetry pictures using the local blue and brown pine beetle-stained wood. His artwork won awards at shows in England, Colorado, Canada, New York, and Minnesota.  But probably his most favorite past time of all was fishing with his son, Tom, and sharing with him his love of art and music.

The purpose of this scholarship is to assist graduating seniors to continue their education in the field of instrumental music, regardless of whether the student is majoring or minoring in music.
